Pietraviva is a small jewel sitting on a hill about 2 kilometres from Ambra in the province of Arezzo. Pietraviva stands for livingstone as in pietra = sone and viva = alive, which comes after the name pietra serena which is the local stone found at the base of its castle.
The original castle of Santa Lucia di Rabbia Canina (another interesting name as in St. Lucia of Canine Rabies) was destroyed at the end of the 13th century and rebuilt in its present location (across the hill from where it was originally) for a better defensive spot. The new castle was named Santa Lucia di Pietraviva.
The medieval church of Santa Lucia was completely rebuilt in 1580, and has been re-structured several times after that, while the parsonage on the right side of the church is from before the 17th century and the bell tower was built in 1910.
This apartment also known as La Vecchia Porta, has been completely refurbished within the old castle walls. It is a quaint 50 square meters with a small independent kitchen and a open living area for dining and a queen size bed in front of the full bathroom with shower.
To make your stay more enjoyable the owners have prepared a “welcome basket” with basic Tuscan ingredients such as salt, pepper, local virgin olive oil…mmmm yummy!, spices, vinegar, a racket of pasta, fruit, and breakfast items such as butter, milk, coffe, tea, local honey, jams and buiscuits!
This apartment is ideal for a couple or a family with a young child.The central location of Pietraviva makes it a perfect stay for someone seeking the mix of the country side and yet panning to visit art cities such as Siena only 20 minutes way, Arezzo, 30 minutes away, or Florence a 50 minute drive.
Additionally, the valleys of Valdarno, Casentino, Valdichiana, the unique countryside of the Crete Senesi, the Val d’Orcia, the Chianti hills, the Val d’Elsa valley with historical towns such as San Gimignano, Pienza and Montepulciano are all only a half hour drive away.
