Castello di Orgiale is located in the South East part of the Chianti Classico area, in the heart of Tuscany, in the comune (county) of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Today Castelnuovo Berardenga, 5 minutes away from Castello di Orgiale, stands on a pleasant hill bordered by two streams, the Ombrone and the Malena, at the crossroads of the ancient roads connecting Siena and Florence.
The name “Castelnuovo” means “new castle” and the significance of this name is tightly tied to the Castello di Orgiale. The district of Berardenga took its name from the noble Berardo, of Frankish descent, who lived in the second half of the 10th century A.D. and was the descendant of a certain Guinigi who had been Count of Siena. With the desegregation of the Carolingian order and the consequent loss of noble title, the family Berardenga managed, between the 10th century and the beginning of the 13th century to extend their rule over a large part of the territories of Siena, using the Castello di Orgiale as its base of operations.
Today the county of Castelnuovo Berardenga covers 177,03 sq km.s between the plain and the hills of the high valley of the river Ombrone. The original nucleus of the community goes back to the 16th century but its current structure dates from 1777 at the time of the Leopoldine reforms.
The Berardenga family built the first tower of Castello di Orgiale during the year 1050, which was later destroyed and rebuilt many times over during the bitter war between Siena and Florence.
A second tower was built at the beginning of the 13th century, along with the new fortifications and surrounding buildings. In 1366, the Republic of Siena, ordered the construction of a new castle near Poggio ai Frati; Castelnuovo was thus born, destined to be the capital and economic mainstay of the Berardenga family establishing the bases for today’s county of Castelnuovo Berardenga.
Ironically enough, at the end of the 18th century, the Villa Chigi was built on the site of the new castle by patrons of the arts. This Villa is surrounded by its splendid gardens with a large collection of statues dedicated to great musicians. The gardens are open for visitors Sundays and on national holidays.
Castello di Orgiale is an important historical landmark that has been carefully restored to accommodate the most discerning visitors. During the mid 1990’s, Bernd Gisy, a German entrepreneur, bought the ruins of the castle. After a painstaking and meticulous restoration that took over four years to complete, the castle has been returned to its medieval splendor surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and housing a winery producing rich and supple Chanti Classico wines and Tuscan olive oil.

Each apartment has been beautifully furnished with 3 to 5 beds, a bathroom per each bedroom, a modern kitchen area with marble counters, and modern appliances, and a living and dining area. The luxurious suite at the top of the famous first tower is especially appealing and can be divided into two apartments depending upon your needs. Separated from the main castle courtyard or cortile is apartment “Giardino”, above the wine cellars, allowing for some extra privacy. Each apartment can accommodate from 2 to 4 people and there are 10 apartments in all, but prices are quoted for two people per apartment.
